Bridging the Gap is an E-book series for all ages, young and old. It is for anyone who needs to improve their reading skills, learn the alphabet, get to know their phonics, focus on comprehension or to have fun learning their sight words. The books also develop fine motor skills which includes drawing, cutting, colouring, painting, tracing and matching words and pictures.
It is important to understand that there is a big difference between reading and comprehending. That is why these books are perfect for anyone, on any level, to acquire the essential skills of reading, understanding, processing and recalling. Bridging the Gap books can be used as an additional resource in classrooms, at home or anywhere you need to use it.
The books were written by Gail Stewart, and she describes her experience as follows:
“I started teaching at the age of 22. I enjoyed teaching so much that I decided to write books to assist learners in a creative and fun way. I managed to write about 40 books in all. I found that these books certainly did help learners who especially face challenges, and the books became very popular amongst many schools. I taught to the age of 60 and then continued private lessons till the age of 77. I love teaching so much, I am still teaching privately to pupils in the afternoons till this day. My last 15 years I was HOD of the junior department which were my most rewarding years of my teaching career.
I thoroughly enjoyed writing all my books of the Bridging the Gap Series. Luckily I was able to teach from all of them. The results from the start were fantastic and the learners loved them. They showed so much enthusiasm when they were faced with working from them. They loved the simple, exciting stories, the puzzles, the rhymes, the games, and the easily understandable questions. I have found that children learn more when they are enjoying themselves.
With the rhymes from Fun with Phonics, they learned phrases like: ‘Please do not tease the animals with the disease’. I often used to hear them chanting all sorts of these rhymes in the playground, this being a very definite way of remembering their phonic sounds.
The Comprehension Books is particularly popular, as all the topics are about animals and there were plenty of facts about animals that they did not know before. As part of these books, children can draw and colour, which we all know they enjoy, learning in a playful and fun way.
It is a known fact that when a teacher cannot get a pupil to understand a certain concept, she indulges in teaching that same concept in seven different ways and the pupil eventually does grasp it. Well I have gone a little further and have used more than seven ways to grasp certain concepts in most of my books. The learners have enjoyed every way and my wish is that learners will keep on enjoying them for a long time still to come.”
Please feel free to contact us anytime should you need guidance on how to use any of these book. We are also available for advise on which books to use.
Enjoy the journey of reading!
COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIY E-BOOKS
There is a difference between reading and understanding what you read. The ability to read, understand, process and to recall the information is vital. The skills are not only essential and influence our language, but has a universal impact on every learners life, from mathematics to history and their social wellbeing. The comprehension books help learners to acquire all these skills as they are on the exact level that the learner will benefit from. They can easily move on to a next book once they have mastered the previous book.
THE ALPHABET E-BOOKS
The three alphabet books are the foundation of the Bridging the Gap series. The alphabet is a learner’s basis to understanding and learning words. The alphabet books have so many activities to help with each letter of the alphabet. A grade 1 learner will enjoy the activities and it gives the parent the opportunity to read the interesting stories to them.
The Frieze set is important because the alphabet is the foundation of our language. It is the guide to understanding how words are pronounced, how to spell and how to think in your language. The set gives learners the opportunity to colour or paint the letters of the alphabet. Working with the letters of the alphabet so closely, will assist the learner to get the letters to come to mind easier.
The Alphabet book, is a full activity book (332 pages of fun!). This is the one book your child needs, as it stimulates all their creativity, skills and enjoyment of learning in a fun and playful way.
FUN WITH PHONICS E-BOOK
Phonics is the key to start making sense of written words, it helps a learner to recognise sounds in words. Phonics are a,b c and blends like sh, tr, nch, tch and it is the foundation of reading. A learner that knows phonics and all the blends will soon become an independent reader. The Fun with phonics set gives ample exercises in a fun way and the learners can start to work independently.
READ – TRACE – COLOUR E-BOOKS
This delightful and fun series of books starts with the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. This little book is full of activities to keep any child busy and happy.
THE SIGHT WORDS E-BOOKS
The Sight Words are the most frequently used words in a book. Each page a child reads contains about 50% of the sight words, which goes to show that if the pupil knows all the sight words, he will know about 50% of the book he is reading. This in itself will give a child an excellent base for reading and provide him with the confidence they need.
Many pupils are fortunate in only having to see a word before they can read and spell it. Others have to be shown the word repeatedly. Sight Words are usually taught via a “look and say” whole word approach. As we know, this has not been successful, especially for learners who face challenges. The purpose of this book is to provide the child with more than seven ways of learning how to read and spell through fun-filled illustrations and sentences.
